Petersville Road Details

The unofficial "south entrance" to Denali National Park runs for 34 miles from Trapper's Creek on the George Parks Highway/Highway 3 (milepost 114.9) to the park boundary. A former mining road, it features paved sections near its beginning and sometimes becomes indistinguishable from its surroundings toward the end. The drive will take you through a landscape with few signs of human activity (and fewer services, so be prepared) and awesome views of Mt. McKinley and the Alaska Range, to abandoned mines and provides access to both Denali State Park and Denali National Park. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. The road is closed to auto traffic in the winter, and sections may be impassable at other times of year as well.
