Denali State Park Details
Small only compared to the Massachusetts-sized Denali National Park, Denali State Park is 325,240 acres of mostly wilderness sitting just to the east of the national park along the George Parks Highway/Highway 3. (Since we're doing state comparisons, let it be known that Denali State Park is about half the size of Rhode Island.) The park features six campgrounds, including the 73-site Byers Lake Campground (which also has three cabins), as well as picnic areas, eight backcountry hiking trails, and the Alaska Veterans Memorial. Most trailheads and campgrounds can be accessed directly from the Parks Highway, but Byers Lake is walk-in only. Popular park activities include hiking, camping, fishing, snowmobiling, hunting and trapping, cross-country skiing, and kayaking the Chulitna River. As with the national park, this wilderness is home to both brown and black bears as well as moose and a variety of smaller mammals and birds. In addition to the natural beauty of its river valleys and the alpine tundra of the short but sharp Curry and Kesugi ridges, Denali State Park offers spectacular views of Mt. McKinley and the Alaska Range.
