Ullswater Way Details
The 20-mile Ullswater Way is a newer walking trail circling the Ullswater lake. It can be completed as a loop hike or broken into sections: Pooley Bridge to the Aira Force waterfall (6.5 miles), Aira Force to Glenridding (3 miles), Glenridding to Howtown (6.5 miles), and Howtown to Pooley Bridge (5 miles) are the established segments. You can walk the path in either direction, and use buses and the famous Ullswater steamers to augment your journey. The walk will take you through woodlands and over fields, up and down hills, through farmland and into the fells, accompanied by views of the lake. Unlike some Lake District walks, this trail is well marked. Along the way you'll pass the site of castles and churches, follow in the steps of Wordsworth, and view the ancient stone circle known as The Cockpit. There are plenty of places to stop for a drink or food, as well as inns where you can lay your head between segments.
