Townend Statesman's House Details

This well-preserved 17th-century stone and slate farmhouse was built in 1626 for 'statesman' farmer George Browne, whose family lived on the property for over 300 years. Although the house was extended in the late 1600s, it has hardly changed since that time. Inside the house is a collection of tools, a number of one-of-a-kind books and some hand-carved furniture made for the family. Guided tours are available daily at 11 a.m. and noon, and cost £5.90 ($8.55) The house is in the village of Troutbeck, 2.2 miles north of Windermere.
