The Glaramara Wainwrights Details
Lake District trailblazer Alfred Wainwright included three peaks on the ridge running from Stonethwaite in Borrowdale to the mountain pass called Esk Hause in his famous walking guides: Bessyboot, Glaramara, and Allen Crags. A classic ridgeline hike takes in all three. Bessyboot is actually a subsidiary summit to Rosthwaite Fell, which just tops 2,000 feet in elevation: a small mountain lake, the Tarn at Leaves, separates the two. Glaramara rises more than 500 feet higher and is the central fell in the ridge, which stands between the Langstrath and Grains Gill valleys. The north side of the fell features a hanging valley and rare natural caves. Three cairns mark the top of Allen Crags. The trailhead on the Borrowdale road midway between Rosthwaite and Seatoller allows walkers to conquer Rosthwaite Fell, Bessyboot, Glaramara, and Allen Crags. The Allerdale Ramble route is another option.
