Rusland Tannery Details
Constructed in the mid-18th century, the Rusland Tannery produced heavy-duty leather for goods such as boots, straps and harnesses. It's a long, narrow two-story building, built into the slope behind. The site is open to the public, and visitors can see the tanning pits and two rebuilt beam stones, or work surfaces, where tanners scraped the hides. The process of tanning required water, lime and oak bark, all available nearby. The tannery is 2.5 miles northwest of Newby Bridge on a minor road to Satterthwaite.
