High Street Details

High Street is the highest summit in the eastern fells of the Lake District, and was once traversed by a Roman road, giving the peak its name. The 2,718-foot (828-meter) peak stands atop the High Street range; the gentle slopes and flat summits that appealed to Roman road-builders also makes High Street a favorite destination for fell-walkers. Among the many routes to the top of High Street is the ridge climb from Mardale, which also offers a chance to spy England's only Golden Eagles, which reside in Riggindale. Other starting points include Patterdale and Kentmere; the path from Troutbeck offers the opportunity to trace the ancient path of the Roman road, which once connected forts in Brougham and Ambleside. Long-distance hikers will find a challenge in hiking the High Street ridge in its entirety, which includes 12 summits over 18.6 miles (30 kilometers).
