Helvellyn Details
England's third-highest peak can be summited via the perilous Striding Edge, which has sheer drops of hundreds of feet. The mountain stands at 3,120 feet (950 meters), north of Ambelside and between the Thirlmere and Ullswater lakes. The plateau-like summit (a small plane once landed here) is famed for its long-distance views: you can see both Scotland and Wales from the top on a clear day, as well as the full sweep of the Lake District. Like many of the Lake District mountains, there are many ways to get to the top of Helvellyn. The most notorious is Striding Edge, a narrow, steep-sided ridge on the eastern side of the mountain. the route begins in Glenridding or Patterdale and passes through Hole-in-the-Wall: the Striding Edge ridge narrows as you climb, and some scrambling is necessary. Use caution here: people have been dying from falls off of Striding Edge for centuries. Alternative ridge climbs from the east side of the mountain include the Swirral Edge and Nevermore Pike routes. There also are easier approaches from Patterdale (via Grisedale and an old pony track) and Glenridding (via Greenside Road). The south ridge of the mountain can be climbed from Grasmere or Patterdale via Grisedale Tarn, and there are several shorter but less scenic ways to the Helvellyn summit from the west, including several bridle paths that can be combined into a loop hike.
