Grasmere Hikes Details
The village of Grasmere sits near the center of the Lake District and is the starting point for several popular hikes, including to Helm Crag, Fairfield, and Easedale Tarn. The hometown of poet William Wordsworth, Grasmere also is transited by England's long-distance Coast to Coast Walk. The town sits on the Rothway river and next to Grasmere lake. Helm Crag is topped with a pair of prominent rocks called the Lion and the Lamb and stands 1,329 feet high (405 meters). Fairfield, the highest of the Eastern Fells, is usually climbed as part of the Fairfield Horseshoe ascent, which begins in either Rydal or Ambleside. Easedale Tarn, a glacial lake north of Grasmere; a centuries-old path runs from the village past Sourmilk Gill to the tarn. As for the 192-mile Coast to Coast Walk, three suggested routes run through Grasmere once it reaches the Grisedale Hause pass: via the Helvellyn or St Sunday Crag mountains or the easy way through the Patterdale valley.
