Coniston Copper Mines Details

Throughout Coppermines Valley are scattered, as you would expect, old copper mines. Although the mines date to around 1600, extraction of copper from the area is thought to go back to Roman times or even earlier. The mines began around 1600, eventually becoming the largest and most profitable in northern England, with some of the shafts running over 1,000 feet deep. Output steadily declined and world copper prices fell in the late 19th century, leading the mines to close. Those visitors interested in the history of the mines should check out [Coniston's Ruskin Museum](http://ruskinmuseum.com), but if you're interested in a visit to the mines themselves, do not attempt to enter one without an experienced guide as there are many unstable areas and false floors. The mines are located 1.6 miles northwest of Coniston.
