Brantwood Barkpeeler's Hut Details
Before Roman times, everyone in Britain lived in round houses, and largely moved with the seasons. Even until Medieval times, people spent their summer on the fells in simple houses and returned to lower ground come winter. Woodland workers also used seasonal homes, of which the reconstructed Brantwood Barkpeeler's Hut is an example. The job of the barkpeeler was to remove bark from oak trees before the trees were coppiced to supply local tanneries. Barkpeeler families made woodland products like brooms and clothes pegs. The hut is on the grounds of Brantwood House, once the home of Victorian intellectual John Ruskin. There's an entry charge of £7.50 ($10.84) for the main house and the grounds, open daily through November and every Wednesday and Saturday from the end of November through March.
