Bassenthwaite Lake Details
Bassenthwaite Lake, in the northern part of the Lake District, offers opportunities for paddling, sailing, boating and swimming. The lake is three miles long, .6-mile wide, and 62 feet deep at its deepest. Paddlers can canoe or kayak into the lake from the River Derwent to the north, but must pass through the no-boating zone at the south of the lake as quietly and quickly as possible. There's public access to the lake at Ouse Bridge, Beck Wythop and along the southwestern shore of the lake as well, and although much of the lakeshore is privately owned, there are public and roadside footpaths around much of its perimeter. There's also a public launch for canoes and small craft at Peel Wyke on the lake's northwest shore. The Wythop Woods hug the lake's western shore, and there's an osprey viewing point in the Dodd Wood on the lake's southeastern shore.
