Gibney Beach Details
A limited-access beach that's a real treat, Gibney Beach is just beyond Hawksnest Beach on the North Shore. About two miles from Cruz Bay, and just after Hawksnest Beach, you'll arrive at a white picket fence, turn right past the fence you will find the gated entrance to both Gibney and Oppenheimer Beach. A handful of parking spots limit the number of beachgoers, so get there early if you want to be among the lucky few. This beach is far less visited than others on St. John, so you'll have a lovely patch of sand and a bit of palm-thrown shade to claim as your own. There can be wind and waves here (at times waves high enough to wash out the whole beach) so it's a little bit of a gamble to come. Snorkeling is good along the eastern side of the beach, and you can see a section of reef damaged by an incident with construction runoff. The damage is greater in shallower water, so if you swim out a little you can see the line of progress toward recovery.
