Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins Details
At the ruins of the Annaberg Sugar Mill you will find a large complex of structures built from ballast stone (among other things) that make up what is left of the island's Colonial legacy. Taking in the size and scope of the complex will give you a better sense of how the St. John and its two dozen sugar plantations operated. Among the structures here are a windmill, sugar factory, a rum still, and slave quarters. The ruins are surprisingly well preserved, and exploring this open-air history museum provides you with ample photo opportunities of both the ruins and the natural beauty of the island. Follow the Leinster Bay Trail to the ruins, but make sure you slow down and pay a little attention to the mangrove trees growing along the shoreline to one side of the trail. Hermit crabs and other creatures live here, and some of the crabs are likely to be among the largest you've ever seen. The trail is an easy one, and getting to the ruins and back is a trip of just 0.4 miles, which takes about 30 minutes if you walk at a leisurely pace.
