Annaberg School Area Trail Details
One of the oldest public schools in the Caribbean stands in ruins at the end of a 0.2-mile, one-way walk along a rather pleasant path. Public schools on St. John date back to 1839, when the Danish passed a law requiring all children -- free and slave alike -- to attend school. The Annaberg School was completed in 1844 and served all of the children of the community. It's hard to believe it when you stand there today, but at one point this area was a hive of academic activity. Be careful parking for this trail: the trailhead isn't obvious or well-marked, and you'll be leaving your car on the side of the road. Watch when you cross to the trailhead, and be careful when you make the return trip as you'll step from the trail directly onto the road -- and cars drive on the left on St. John, another legacy of the island's former Danish rule.
