Maltese Cross Cabin Details
When Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Medora, N.D., in 1883 for a hunting trip, it would be impossible for him to know how the visit would impact his life and the future of the country. Roosevelt quickly fell in love with the local landscape and cattle culture, which prompted him to invest in a property called the Maltese Cross Ranch, seven miles south of Medora. A one-and-a-half-story cabin was constructed, and this is where Roosevelt split his time between New York and North Dakota for the next several years. His interest in the cattle industry eventually waned, and the Maltese Cross Cabin found new ownership in 1900. The cabin was moved on a number of occasions before it found permanent residence in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where it has been restored to its original state and can be visited today near the park main visitor's center. The Maltese Cross Cabin is wheelchair-accessible.
