Aunt Betty Pond Loop Details

Trail Type: Moderate Distance: 6 miles This scenic loop contains a number of challenging, steep climbs, but is also home to some of the Park's most beautiful scenery. Before wandering through forests, meadows, and marshes, the trail begins at the Eagle Lake Parking Lot on Route 233, where it travels under the Eagle Lake Road Bridge and meets Post 6. The trail continues to Post 9, where it turns onto the actual Aunt Betty Pond Loop. From here, the trail begins two lengthy ascents during which there are excellent views of Eagle Lake, Cadillac and Blue Hill Mountains, and Aunt Betty Pond. The trail descends slowly back to the pond to an area that is often flooded during the early spring, and that intercepts with Giant Slide Loop at nearby Post 11. To take Giant Slide Loop, bear right. The loop continues around Aunt Betty Pond, traveling through the tranquil, songbird-filled Gilmore Meadow, and following the Seven Bridges segment as it crosses Chasm Brook in six, not seven, places. A left at Post 10 leads back to the pretty shoreline of Eagle Lake, and another left at Post 8 returns the trail to the carriage road on the lake's west side. Interconnecting trails: Giant Slide Loop, Post 11. Aunt Betty Pond is unique because it's the largest pond in the Park without vehicle access. As for the name, no one really knows who Aunt Betty was, but like many other places in New England, the name stuck. One of the highlights of this trip is relaxing along the shores of the pond, a tranquil place to read a book or take a nap.
