Deer Haven Details

Near the Conata Picnic Area is the start of the hike to Deer Haven, a popular area for wildlife viewing. With its juniper forests and prairie grasslands, this shaded area is an ideal place for backpackers to camp as well as a haven for wildlife. Access Deer Haven from the Conata Picnic Area, which is near the Sage Creek Primitive Campground. From the picnic area, head southeast along the badlands formations. This area is known as the Conata Basin. You'll go through a fence and into the basin; the elevated, green Deer Haven area is the distance. Climb uphill for great views (mind the steep terrain and unstable ground) that may include bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep and perhaps a fox or two.
