Sheep Mountain Table Details
On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is Sheep Mountain Table, a large mesa in the Stronghold (South) Unit of Badlands National Park. There's an overlook called Gunnery Range Overlook worth checking out, but the Table is one of the few parts of this unit where camping is forbidden. If you decide to take a hike, keep your distance from any bison you encounter. To reach Sheep Mountain Table from Scenic, S.D., drive south on SD 27 for four miles. After 2.5 miles, just before the road cuts into Badlands National Park, there's an unpaved road you can take to Sheep Mountain Table. Only attempt the drive up to Sheep Mountain Table if you have a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle.
