One of the largest collections of mammal fossils from the Eocene and Oligocene periods is found in the White River Badlands. Fish, marine, reptile, and turtle fossils have been discovered in the Fox Hills and the Pierre Shale. Some fossils date back 75 million years and can be traced to the ancient sea that once covered this area. Fossils of camels, rhinoceroses, rabbits, rodents, antelopes, and other Oligocene animals give scientists a view into the past.
