Spring and fall will offer pleasant weather for visitors to Badlands National Park. Nights are cool and days are pleasant, with potential storms year around. May and June can be rainy, so carrying rain gear and extra clothing is a must. Summer temperatures can sometimes be extreme and present serious health concerns for visitors. Heat sickness is common, so staying hydrated is key. Severe thunderstorms are not uncommon during this warm season, with hail and lightning. Be aware of high winds, and avoid the park's ridges and exposed areas during electrical storms. Winter weather is unpredictable at the park. Sudden blizzards may occur even if the daytime temperatures are mild. Winter storms can be life-threatening, so check in with park rangers at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center before heading into the backcountry.
