Compton Peak Details
Start your hike to Compton Peak off Skyline Drive across from the Compton Gap parking area (near mile 10.4) at the Appalachian Trail post. Take the AT south to a T-intersection. If you take the trail to the right, it will lead you to the west viewpoint of the peak; return to the post and head the other way to reach the east viewpoint. To see columnar jointing, a geologic feature of the park's Catoctin greenstone, follow the rocky, blue-blazed trail to the base of the cliff. Re-trace your steps to finish at your starting point.
