Brandywine Falls Details
Follow the boardwalk off Brandywine Road to Brandywine Falls, a 60-foot waterfall that's one of the most popular attractions in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The trail takes you down into the waterfall's moist gorge for a head-on look at the cascading waters, which flow over a layer of Berea Sandstone and down an exposed face of softer shale. The falls' famous bridal-veil effect -- a product of the falling water's passage over the fractured shale -- is more evident when the water level is low. The falls were once topped by a saw mill, and the village of Brandywine grew up around this and several other mills in the early 19th century. Most evidence of the mill village has vanished, but one exception is the James Wallace House, now the Inn at Brandywine Falls. If you want to explore this area further, the 1.5-mile Brandywine Gorge Trail takes you down to creek level and passes close to springtime vernal pools and exposed rock layers.
