Hanksville Details

Remote Hanksville sits at the junction of Highways 24 and 95, about 38 miles east of the Capitol Reef Visitor Center, and has a population of just over 200 people. The town is near the confluence of the Fremont River and Muddy Creek, which join together to form the Dirty Devil River, which flows to the Colorado River. Settled in 1882, the town became known as Hanksville in 1885 and was named after Ebenezer Hanks, a Mormon pioneer who helped settle the small outpost. Visitors today will find small hotels and gas stations along the main routes through town, as well as a few restaurants.
