Bicknell Details

Bicknell is about 25 miles west of Fruita on Hwy. 24 and has a population of about 322. The town was originally called Thurber or Thurber Town, named for A.K. Thurber, who build the first house in the area in 1879. In 1897 the entire town upped stakes and moved to another location because of sandy soil and poor water conditions. In 1914, wealthy author, historian, and Education Commissioner for Rhode Island Thomas W. Bicknell offered a 1,000-volume library to any town in Utah that would rename itself after him. The town of Grayson also agreed to the terms, so in a 1916 compromise, Grayson changed its name to Blanding in honor of Bicknell's wife's maiden name, and the two towns split the library, each receiving 500 books. There's one gas station in town, and a few hotels as well.
