Behunin Cabin Details

The one-room Behunin Cabin was built in 1882 by Mormon settler Elijah Cutler Behunin and his family, some of the earliest pioneers to establish a homestead in the Capitol Reef area. The cabin was not occupied for long, however, as the family moved out after only one year due to repeated floods on the Fremont River that ruined their irrigation system and destroyed their crops. Today's visitors can peer into the window of the tiny cabin that once housed a large family. The Behunin family eventually moved west and up-canyon to Fruita with their 13 children, becoming one of the first families to settle that area.
