Mountain Top Trail Details
The West Mountain Trails, including Mountain Top Trail, sit just behind and to the west of Bathhouse Row. The trailhead for the 1.5-mile one-way Mountain Top Trail begins at Whittington Avenue as a steep, smooth gravel path. There's also a parking area here where hikers can leave their cars. At the intersection with the West Mountain Trail, continue to the right to stay on Mountain Top as the path begins its climb to the peak of West Mountain. The remainder of the hike is smooth, with novaculite rocks littering the trail near the peak. At the intersection on the mountain peak, the Sunset Trail crosses to the right - hikers who go this way have a 13.5-mile round trip. The Mountain Top Trail continues across the Sunset Trail as a curvy, steep descent made a bit difficult by stone and concrete water bars, so hikers should watch their step. The trail meets West Mountain Trail again to the left. Hikers will be surrounded by large pine trees, and should keep an eye out year-round for pine warblers in the shortleaf pines. The trail continues down the mountain, where it meets Prospect Avenue after another 100 yards.
