Maurice Bathhouse Details
The Maurice Bathhouse opened for business on Jan. 1, 1912, the first facility offering a more luxurious bathhouse experience. In fact, Sam Fordyce, owner of the Fordyce Bathhouse, waited until the Maurice was complete before building his slightly-more-luxurious building right next door. The present Maurice Bathhouse, at 23,000 square feet, replaced an existing Victorian-style building, the Independent Bathhouse, and was later renamed the Maurice Bathhouse after owner Charles Maurice. The architectural style is eclectic, but its major stylistic features are Mediterranean and Renaissance Revival. Once the Fordyce Bathhouse was completed in 1915, Maurice renovated his bathhouse to include stained-glass skylights, along with hand-painted canvas wall coverings. He also added a Craftsman-style den to the third floor, complete with a stained-glass ceiling. The Maurice had a gymnasium, staterooms, a roof garden, twin elevators, and, in the 1930s, a therapeutic pool in the basement. The Maurice closed in November 1974, and is not currently open to park visitors.
