Beehive Trail Details
Beehive Trail is not for those afraid of heights! A great ladder trail alternative to the Precipice, this short, strenuous trail climbs up iron ladders and over sheer rock cliffs that were created by the retreat of huge glaciers during the last ice age. As the glaciers melted, stress from the repeated freezing and thawing of water against the Beehive's surface caused rocks to weaken and collapse, resulting in one of Acadia's most exhilarating climbs. And while the ocean views from the summit are beautiful, the interior views of the island are some of the best in the Park. Take in the views of Frenchman Bay and Sand Beach at the top of the Beehive before heading down. It's not advised to descend the Beehive itself, so plan to hike a loop back to your car on the Bowl Trail. If you are up for a longer hike, hop on to Ocean Path or the Gorham Mountain Trail back to Sand Beach. Take note that the Beehive is not recommended to visitors with small children and dogs are prohibited. Make sure you wear appropriate footwear for traction as you climb the rungs. Also use extra caution early in the morning or after rainfall when the trail becomes extremely slippery. Trailhead: Off Park Loop Road across from Sand Beach Parking Area.
