Emerald Ridge Trail Details
This 16-mile out-and-back includes 7.8 miles of hiking on a closed road, but offers a fascinating look at andesite columns, subalpine meadows, and views of Mount Rainier and the Tahoma Glacier. Enter the park via the Nisqually Entrance, turn left onto Westside Road, and drive about 3 miles to the gate at Dry Creek. Park and then hike or bike 3.8 miles to the South Puyallup River Shortcut trailhead. The trail climbs gradually through old-growth forest until it reaches the South Puyallup Camp, about 2.1 away: keep an eye out for the andesite columns just before the camp; these hexagonal columns were formed by hot lava as it cooled after flowing through this area thousands of years ago. The trail becomes rocky and steeper as you make your way up to the top of Emerald Ridge. Stick to the trail along the ridge to avoid damaging the fragile vegetation in this subalpine environment. Enjoy stunning views of the Tahoma Glacier on Rainier's southeast flank as you approach the end of the trail.
