Packwood, Wash., lies between Mount Rainier to the north and Mount St. Helens to the south. The town is surrounded by wilderness areas and national forest, and is home to the White Pass Ski Area. Although the town itself is unincorporated, Packwood and the surrounding area have a population of approximately 1,330. It was named for William Packwood, a pioneer from Virginia; he and James Longmire were asked by the Washington Territorial Legislature to chart a low pass over the Cascade Mountains. Forest-product industries as well as the National Forest and Park Services have traditionally provided most employment for the town, while the biannual Packwood Flea Market on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends attracts lots of tourists.
