Learn About the Park
Black bears are numerous in the Park, and even if you don't see one, you'll be constantly reminded of their presence by the metal food lockers used to keep food safe from them. Mountain lions also roam the Park, though they are seldom seen. The Park's coyotes are often seen walking alongside the road. Mule deer and two types of native squirrel (California ground squirrels and Western grey squirrels) are much more common, and you also may see marmots -- big, golden-furred rodents -- sunning on Yosemite rocks. Rattlesnakes are one of the most common snakes in Yosemite: give these poisonous reptiles a wide berth. In the skies above, look for red-tailed hawks, peregrine falcons, and great grey owls, among other birds.
