Activities

Both the summit area and costal area of Kipahulu offer a variety of hukes. Summit hikes vary from 1/4-mile routes to all-day trips and overnight backcountry journeys. In Kipahulu, visitors can take a short walk to see the pools of O'heo Gulch and the Maui coastline, or plan for a half-day hike to the upper pools, waterfalls, and bamboo forest. Overnight hikes are possible in the Haleakala Wilderness, and there are also weekly guided hikes in the Waikamoi Cloud Forest. Because the ecosystem is quite fragile, hikers are required to stay on marked trails. Hiking groups are limited to 12 or fewer people-larger groups will have to split up.
