Ka Lu'u o ka O'o Details
Ka Lu'u o ka O'o ("Plunge of the Digging Stick") is a multicolored volcanic cinder cone in the Haleakala summit crater that hikers can walk around via a spur trail off of the Sliding Sands Trail. Watch your footing if you go -- the trail can be rough -- and don't descend into the Ka Lu'u o ka O'o crater. The hike is a nice option if you only have a few hours to explore the summit wilderness area. Ka Lu'u o ka O'o, while silent now, was the scene of some of the more recent volcanic activity in the Haleakala crater, with an eruption of lava taking place here sometime within the last 950 years or so.
