The Black Forest Details
The Black Forest is a wilderness region in the park's northern unit, and is home to badlands, eroded rock formations and petrified wood. One of the park's complete trunks of petrified wood, the Onyx Bridge, is accessible via an off-the-beaten-path, 4-mile roundtrip hike. The logs in this area of the park are a bit darker than those in the southern portion, but many of them are longer than 50 feet and spread out over shallow ravines and on plateaus.
