Whipple Point, located along the rim of the Painted Desert, was named for U.S. Army Lt. Amiel Whipple, who passed this way in 1853 on a surveying mission and named Lithodendron Wash (Greek for "stone tree") because of the petrified wood he found in the wash nearby.
