Running east-west, Interstate 40 (I-40) bisects the park into northern and southern units. Just off the interstate is the northern entrance to the park and the Painted Desert Visitor Center. Running parallel to the interstate is a portion of historic Route 66, which the much larger highway officially replaced in Petrified Forest in 1958.
