Desert Queen Mine Road Details
Desert Queen Mine Road intersects with Pinto Basin Road directly across from the better-known Geology Tour Road. Turn north onto Desert Queen Mine Road if you want to visit the ruins of the Desert Queen Mine -- the trailhead is about a mile in on the dirt road -- or take the 2.5-mile hike to Lucky Boy Vista, a modestly elevated desert overlook. The trail to Desert Queen Mine is flat and easy: it's just 0.7 miles to a viewpoint, and 1.6 miles if you want to go all the way to the mine ruins. The remains of the former gold mine include old foundations and furniture, machinery and mineshafts. A plaque explains the history of the mine, which was a successful operation for more than 60 years. Bikes are welcome in Joshua Tree on any road open to vehicles, including backcountry roads.
