Skull Rock Details

Right along the main park road is Skull Rock, a popular stop for Joshua Tree visitors. The rock began to take on its skull-like appearance long ago, as raindrops accumulated in tiny depressions and started to erode the granite. As the erosion continued, more water accumulated, until eventually two hollowed-out "eye sockets" formed, and the rock began to resemble a skull. There's a parking area across the road from the rock, or, for visitors who want a closer look, there's a 1.7-mile nature trail to the rock that begins either just across from the entrance to Jumbo Rocks Campground or inside the campground, across from the amphitheater.
