Mount Deception Details

Overlooking Brooks Glacier is 11,539-foot Mt. Deception, whose name stems from an Army expedition investigating a plane crash during the Second World War. The C-47 transport plane carrying 19 passengers crashed into the mountain on Sept. 18, 1944 and the wreckage was soon spotted, but it took a Land Sea Rescue team 53 days to reach the crash site. Bizarrely, no bodies (or even body parts) were ever found. The previously unnamed peak was christened Mt. Deception in memory of the crash.
