The 17,400-foot Mount Foraker would be more famous in its own right if it was not standing in the shadow of mighty Denali: it's the third-tallest peak in North America behind its 20,000-foot neighbor and Mt. Saint Elias, also in Alaska. Named for an Ohio senator, Mt. Foraker was known as "Denali's wife" among some local tribes owing to its close proximity to the larger mountain. The twin peaks of Mt. Foraker were first successfully climbed in 1934. Climbing Mt. Foraker, such as via the Sultana Ridge, is a major technical challenge for any mountaineer and takes two weeks or more.
