For the best auto touring of Canyonlands, allow half a day to drive from Moab to the south end of the Islands in the Sky District. First, stop at the Visitor Center for maps and information about the geology of the park. From there, continue on the paved road in the direction of the Grand View Overlook, stopping along the way at Mesa Arch for a short walk and other overlooks. Fill your tank up in Moab and bring water and snacks since there are no services in the park. Hundreds of miles of dirt roads are open to four-wheeling in the park. Check with the rangers to learn about road conditions which can be extremely challenging, especially after heavy rains. And, although permitted in cars on paved roads pets are prohibited on the backroads and backcountry of Canyonlands.
