Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
This grove of giant sequoia (sequoiadendron giganteum) trees is currently being restored to ensure its dynamic ecology and increase its resilience. These trees are considered some of the largest and oldest living organisms on the earth Among the biggest is the Giant Grizzly -- one of its limbs is larger than the trunk of the largest non-sequoia tree in the grove. You can learn about the sequoias on the one-hour Big Trees Tram Tour, but a cheaper and healthier alternative is to pick up a 50-cent brochure at the grove, which has a wealth of information as well as a hiking map. The Mariposa Grove Museum has exhibits on sequoia ecology and the history of the grove, as well as a gift shop. The grove is planned to reopen sometime in September of 2017.
