Basic Information

The Island Explorer operates on Mount Desert Island from June 23 through October 10, 2022. Fall service begins on August 31, 2022. On Schoodic Peninsula, spring service begins on May 25, summer service begins on June 23, and fall service operates from August 31 through October 10. This bus service provides an economical, efficient, and ecologically friendly way to tour Acadia. The buses operate on eight routes, including service and connections to the Park's campgrounds, Bar Harbor, Park Loop Road, Brown Mountain, Southwest Harbor, Jordan Pond, and the carriage road system. The Island Explorer is a terrific and easy way to get around the Park and helps to ease congestion. Once you arrive on the island, leave your car at your campsite or hotel and hop on the shuttle! There's even a bus service around the Schoodic Peninsula segment of the Park, which you can access via the Bar Harbor-Winter Harbor ferry in the summer. The buses are free to ride; fares are covered by your Park entrance fee. Island Explorer also provides special buses for bicyclists heading from Bar Harbor to the carriage roads at Eagle Lake (This service will operate in 2022 on a revised route). Buses on major routes run about every half-hour. You can meet the buses at designated stops or just flag one down.
