The Captians' Return Details
The Captains' Return statue, commissioned by the Greater St. Louis Community Foundation to commemorate the bicentennial of the end of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, stands as a striking symbol of American exploration and achievement. This 22-foot tall bronze statue depicts William Clark and Meriwether Lewis returning to St. Louis in 1806 after their historic journey to the Pacific and back. Their return marked the conclusion of one of the most significant explorations in U.S. history, and this statue captures that triumphant moment. After its initial installation in 2006, the statue faced challenges from the powerful forces of the Mississippi River. Frequent flooding led to images of the statue with Clark waving his hat, seemingly in distress, as the waters partially submerged it. In 2014, the statue was removed for restoration to repair flood damage. By 2016, it was returned to the riverfront in a new location, slightly south and elevated about 17 feet higher than before, ensuring its protection from future floods and preserving its important role in St. Louis' public art landscape. The sculptor, Harry Weber, is a well-known figure in St. Louis, with thirty-one of his works displayed throughout the city, including the statues of Dred and Harriet Scott at the Old Courthouse, the Plaza of Champions at Busch Stadium, and Malcolm Martin at Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park across the Mississippi River. Weber's masterful works capture moments of historical significance, and The Captains' Return stands as a proud reminder of St. Louis' pivotal role in the story of American exploration.
