Sandstone School Details
The Sandstone School, originally named Green Sulphur District School, opened in 1925 and served as an academic anchor in the community until its closure in 1994. Over the decades, it educated more than 900 students through high school, complete with a vocational annex, gymnasium, and football field. Known affectionately as "The Hornets," alumni maintain strong ties through regular reunions. The site's transformation from school to visitor center stands as a symbol of the area's enduring educational spirit and its role in the broader cultural history of the New River Gorge region.
