Endless Wall Trail Details

Rated as an easy to moderate hike, the Endless Wall Trail is one of the most breathtaking hikes in New River Gorge and Preserve. This 2.4-mile trail follows the rim of the gorge, offering stunning views nearly 1,000 feet above the New River. Named for the towering sandstone cliffs that stretch along the gorge's edge, the trail provides a mix of forested paths, rocky outcrops, and scenic overlooks, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers alike. The trail begins at either the Fern Creek Trailhead or the Nuttall Trailhead, with both routes leading to the Diamond Point Overlook, a highlight of the hike. This panoramic viewpoint offers an unmatched vista of the river below, surrounded by the rugged Appalachian landscape. Along the way, hikers will traverse a mix of shaded woodlands, creek crossings, and rocky ledges, where rock climbers can often be seen scaling the sheer cliffs that give the trail its name. In addition to its scenic beauty, the Endless Wall Trail provides insight into the park's geology and history. The sandstone cliffs, once part of an ancient seabed, have been sculpted over millions of years by wind and water. Nearby, remnants of the region's coal mining past serve as reminders of the area's industrial heritage. While the hike is relatively short, the terrain can be uneven, and caution is advised near the cliff edges. Limited parking at trailheads means arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends. Open year-round, the Endless Wall Trail is particularly stunning in autumn when the gorge is ablaze with fall colors. Whether hiking for the views, the history, or the peaceful surroundings, this trail offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of West Virginia.
