Gauley Depot Details

The arrival of the railroads in Southern West Virginia transformed the coal-rich Appalachian region into a booming industrial frontier. The Chesapeake & Ohio, Norfolk & Western, and Virginian Railways carved their way through mountains, opening coalfields and bringing waves of opportunity. African American laborers, many fleeing the entrenched racism of the Deep South, played a central role-laying track, building stations, and mining coal. Between 1869 and 1873, thousands helped shape the C&O Railway, finding not only employment but also a pathway to greater dignity and stability in a region where their labor was vital and their presence reshaped communities.
