Alkali Flat Trail Details

The Alkali Flat Trail at White Sands is the park's most strenuous hike, offering an unforgettable trek through an ocean of shifting gypsum dunes. Despite its name, this trail is anything but flat-hikers must navigate rolling dunes that rise up to 60 feet (18 meters), making each step a challenge in the soft, powdery sand. The 5-mile (8 km) loop can take about four hours to complete, but with no shade, no reliable landmarks, and constant elevation changes, it feels much longer. Located seven miles (11.2 km) from the visitor center along Dunes Drive, the trail begins at a designated parking area. The only navigational aids are red diamond-shaped markers, which guide hikers through the otherwise featureless landscape. Because strong winds can quickly erase footprints, it's essential to always locate the next marker before continuing. If visibility becomes poor due to blowing sand, hikers should turn back to avoid becoming disoriented in the seemingly endless expanse of white. The reward for tackling Alkali Flat is a stunning, otherworldly landscape. The gypsum dunes stretch uninterrupted in every direction, with only the distant San Andres Mountains breaking the horizon. The trail skirts the remnants of an ancient lakebed, a stark reminder of the region's dramatic geological history. The silence here is almost absolute, broken only by the crunch of footsteps on the sand or the occasional call of a raven overhead. Given the extreme environment, preparation is key. Hikers should bring at least one gallon (4 liters) of water per person, as dehydration can set in quickly. Sun protection is essential-hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen will help fend off the relentless desert sun. High-energy snacks provide much-needed fuel for the demanding trek. Pets are welcome but must remain on a leash, with owners ensuring they have enough water. This trail is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are well-prepared, Alkali Flat offers one of the most rewarding adventures in White Sands.
