Mount Baldy Summit Trail Details

This featured out-and-back trail offers a dramatic hike around one of Indiana Dunes National Park's most iconic features-Mount Baldy. From the parking lot, follow the trail to a staircase along the entrance road. After the climb, the path curves right and skirts the western slope of Mount Baldy, leading to a junction. Stay straight here and continue to the edge of the towering dune, where you'll be treated to sweeping, panoramic views of Lake Michigan. For those up for a sandy scramble, a steep descent leads to the beach below. Keep in mind: the only way out is back up that same sandy slope, so plan accordingly and pack light. Once on the beach, feel free to wander along the shoreline-but please stay on the sand to protect fragile dune vegetation. When you're ready to head back, simply retrace your steps to return to the parking lot. Mount Baldy is more than just a scenic dune-it's a dynamic geological force. Towering 126 feet above Lake Michigan, it's actually on the move, shifting inland at a rate of about four feet per year thanks to wind-driven sand movement. This natural migration has been accelerated by beach erosion, made worse by a breakwall constructed for Michigan City Harbor, which blocks the natural flow of sand to the base of the dune. In an effort to slow this erosion, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began a series of sand replenishments starting in 1974, using everything from trucked-in sand to massive slurry pipelines. Despite these efforts, Mount Baldy continues its slow march inland, offering hikers a rare opportunity to witness a living, breathing landscape in motion.
